Floods can happen at any time of year, especially in the south. Obviously, heavy rainfall is most often the cause of flooding. But what causes floods?
According to the Meriam-Webster Dictionary, the definition of the word “flood” is “a rising and overflowing of a body of water especially onto normally dry land.” Floods happen when the ground is no longer able to absorb rainwater. It begins in puddles and can continuously rise higher until the water floods homes, buildings and other structures.
If you live in an area that is highly susceptible to floods, it is crucial that you take precautions to avoid potential damages from water and/or mold. Place plastic tarps and sandbags against doors, low windows and the side of the house that is threatened by floods.
