According to the U.S. Fire Administration

2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss.

Failure to clean the dryer (34 percent) is the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires.

More home clothes dryer fires occur in the fall and winter months, peaking in January.

How to prevent a dryer fire:

This January, check your connections! Be sure your dryer vents are clean.

A few best practices are:

• Clean your dryer vent EVERY TIME you use the dryer.
• Clean your dryer vent ductwork every year. 
• Have your dryer cleaned regularly by a professional, especially if it is taking longer than normal for clothes to dry.

What to expect after a dryer fire:

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

On average, 49% of fires start in the kitchen making it one of the leading causes of house fires.. It only takes a quick moment for something on your stove to catch on fire, and you have a costly disaster on your hands. Here are some safety tips to avoid expensive home repairs:

Frying With Oil

66% of kitchen fires occur while cooking with oil. Anytime you fry food using oil, it needs constant attention. Grease fires can spread fast and still have the capability to cause a fire if the residue is left on the stovetop after use. If your food catches fire while cooking, safely cover a non-glass lid onto the pan to extinguish the flames, and then turn off your stove. Do not use water; this will only cause your fire to spread.

Leaving Cooking Unattended

It is imperative not to walk away from your food while you're cooking. Neglecting your food while cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires. If you are cooking, it is essential to only focus on that one task. It is not recommended to multi-task while cooking because an accident can happen in a split second. 

Cooking with Too High Temperatures

Although turning your stove to its highest setting seems like a good idea when cooking, setting your appliances too high is very dangerous. It is recommended to cook at medium temperatures to prevent food from combusting. If you have a gas stove, never let the flame rise above the top of the pan. Cooking requires a lot of patience; jumping the gun and attempting to cook faster than intended can put you and your family at risk.

Overloaded extension cord safety tips

Working from home may have you looking for more outlets to charge that phone, laptop, desk light, space heater, and whatever else you may need. As your fire safety experts, we’ve decided to provide a few tips to avoid a fire.

Please do NOT plug power strips into extension cords and do NOT plus extension cords into power strips.

1. Install the right number of smoke alarms. Test them once a month and replace the batteries at least once a year. 
2. Teach children what smoke alarms sound like and what to do when they hear one. 
3. Ensure that all household members know two ways to escape from every room of your home and know the family meeting spot outside of your home.
4. Establish a family emergency communications plan and ensure that all household members know who to contact if they cannot find one another.
5. Practice escaping from your home at least twice a year. Press the smoke alarm test button or yell “Fire“ to alert everyone that they must get out.
6. Make sure everyone knows how to call 9-1-1.
7. Teach household members to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their clothes should catch on fire.

Did you know according to the National Fire Protection Association, that fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires each year?! We want you to have a safe time as you celebrate the Fourth of July! Here are some tips from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to keep in mind.

• Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
• Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers.
• Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don't realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.
• Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
• Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
• Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
• Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or another mishap.
• Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
• Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
• After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.
• Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

Did you know it was reported that about 30% of tree, brush, and grass fires happen during the Spring season? 

According to FEMA.gov this occurs because

• Humidity is lower
• Winds tend to be higher
• Dead leaves are still on the ground

They say those listed above are the perfect situation to cause a fire due to the sun beaming down and bring those leaves. 

1. Keep matches and lighters away from children.
2. If you want to burn trash, do so in a metal container, after you have cleared the surrounding area. Make sure you aren't near overhanging branches, and never leave a fire unattended.
3. Never throw cigarette butts out your vehicle window.
4. Install spark arresters on small engines and equipment.
5. Weld only in a shop building or a cleared area.
6. If your car has a catalytic converter, keep it off-dry grass and away from brush.
7. Report any suspicious or out of place persons or vehicles that you think might be maliciously starting fires

Grill Master Fire Safety Tips

Time has gone forward, dogwood trees are blooming, temperatures are warming up, and we’re in the backyard grilling!

As many are preparing to have a little more fun than we did last year (due to the pandemic) our grills are ready to be fired up. 

While we’re hanging out it’s important we know that according to NFPA, Grill fires on residential properties result in an estimated average of 10 deaths, 100 injuries, and $37 million in property loss each year! That means a casual evening bbq could turn into a disaster without the proper knowledge. We’ve provided some tips to keep you and your family safe.

• Make sure your grill is clean before using it. Old grease and meat pieces can easily cause fire or fire flares
• Keep a water spray bottle in the event your fire flares up
• Grill away from your home and other flammable structures
• If you’re using a gas grill check for gas leaks- You can make sure no gas is leaking from your gas grill by making a solution of half liquid dish soap and half water and rubbing it on the hoses and connections. Then, turn the gas on (with the grill lid open.) If the soap forms large bubbles, that's a sign that the hoses have tiny holes or that the connections are not tight enough.
• Don’t leave your grill unattended

Keep a fire extinguisher within a couple of steps of your grill. And KNOW HOW TO USE IT.

• Have an escape plan

• Walkthrough your home and look for two ways out of every room (escape planning)
• Plan an outside meeting place where everyone will meet once they have escaped. A good meeting place is something permanent, like a tree, light pole, or mailbox a safe distance in front of the home.

That’s a scary number, especially at this of the year when we’re getting a mixture of warm and freezing cold days. Many people using space heaters to avoid high electric bills or simply to heat certain rooms in a home. Check out these tips to have a safe experience while using your space heater.

1. Inspect your heater to be sure it doesn’t have any defects.

According to CNN NEWS, cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires in the United States & grease fires are a main culprit. Thus with holidays right around the corner we thought of our dear customers. We know many will be frying turkeys for the holidays and just cooking in general. Well if that’s you, then you need to know how to cook a great Thanksgiving dinner without burning down the house.

So let’s say you do end up having something in the eye of your stove and you see a small flame. So do you grab a cup of water to put it out? No, even though it started from something in the eye of the stove, you’re frying chicken and there’s grease on that pot which is fueling those flames. It’s now a grease fire!

Well, how do you put it out? You need a fire extinguisher that can handle grease fires and should be dry and chemical-based. Using a fire extinguisher that's water based can have disastrous results!  We would suggest that you pull the pin, you squeeze the trigger, and you aim at the base of the fire. If you put it up high, the chemical falls on top of the fire and doesn't help.

Yes, according to the WMAR News, extension cord fires kill 50 people annually.  Below you will find a few tips on how to properly use extension cords.

1. Never overload your powerstrips
2. Never plug in high power appliances into extension cords like

2. Microwaves & Toasters

Those things should be plugged directly into the wall.

Did you know that according to nfpa.org July is the peak month for grill fires (18%), including both structure, outdoor or unclassified fires, followed by June (15%), May (13%), and August (12%). Guess what month we’re in...August! On top of that many of us are home more than we have been in previous years due to the health pandemic we’re all trying our best to avoid. With that in mind, many are cooking at home more than usual. If you’re that cook that happens to be a grill master here are some tips that can help keep you safe.

1. Make sure your gas/coal grill is away from your home. Don’t grill too close to your home or in your garage. The smoke needs an exit and in case of a fire, you should be 10ft or more from your home.
2. Have a fire extinguisher, sand, and a spray bottle of water. The spray bottle of water is to handle small flare-ups. If it begins to get out of hand use your fire extinguisher or sand to put it out.
3. Another way to prevent fires, in general, is to keep your grill clean. Not only does it keep out bugs and rodents but it also keeps grease build-up from causing a fire!

As we have seen & heard many begin their annual usage of fireworks it’s important to us here at SERVPRO to leave you a few tips on how to be safe while having fun.

1. NEVER light fireworks indoors. No sparklers, or anything!
2. Don’t try to relight or reuse malfunctioning fireworks. Also, If your fireworks aren’t releasing from the barrel you placed them in don’t look into the barrel.                                   
3. Soak in water malfunctioning fireworks to assure they are not lit before discarding. You can also keep a bucket of water and or fire extinguisher in the event of a fire emergency.
4. Never use illegal fireworks!

Classes of fire

• Class A - Fires involving solid materials such as wood, paper or textiles. These are said to be the easiest to put out. It is recommended to use water or a fire extinguisher to put out class A fires.
• Class B - Involve ignitable liquids or gases like petroleum grease, alcohol, paint, propane, or gasoline. Class B fires should be extinguished using foam, powder, or carbon dioxide extinguishers.
• Class C - fires involving electrical. To extinguish this type of fire it is recommended to use carbon dioxide or dry powder extinguishers.
• Class D - Fires involving metals. Fire Equipment Manufacturer's Association advised extinguishing these types of fires with a dry powder extinguisher only
• Class k - Fires involving cooking oils such as in deep-fat fryers. Extinguish a Class K fire with a wet chemical extinguisher, according to the New York City Fire Department.

With the COVID-19 virus running rapid many have either decided or been forced to spend the majority of their time at home. Since many people are seeking peace of mind and a bit of relaxation during this time we wanted to remind the candle lover of handle safety.

According to the national candle association:

• Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations on burn time and proper use. In general, it is recommended that candles do not burn for longer than four hours and cool for at least two hours before relighting.
• When lighting a candle, use long matches or a long-reach lighter. Keep your hair and loose clothing away from the flame.
• Never leave a candle unattended.
• Never burn a candle on or near anything that can catch fire. Keep burning candles away from furniture, drapes, bedding, carpets, books, paper, flammable decorations, etc.
• Keep candles out of the reach of children and pets.

1. Replace the batteries when you hear the beep or once a year.
2. Dust your alarms the can get cobwebs around them and you don’t want anything blocking them. So vacuum those spiderwebs and keep them clean.
3. Test them monthly!
4. Replace after 10 years
5. Invest in the interconnected alarms (one sounds they all sound)
6. Make sure you have one in EVERY BEDROOM and on every level in your home.

Home fires occur for a variety of reasons, but there are several pieces of at-home equipment to help keep you, your family, and your home safe. These include:

• Smoke detectors. These devices will sound an alarm if significant smoke is detected in your home, alerting you and possibly your neighbors to the fire. Smoke detectors are often available at your local fire department.
• Fire extinguishers. There are typically five classes of fire extinguishers:
  1. Class A: Ordinary combustibles, such as paper, fabric, wood, cardboard and plastic
  2. Class B: Flammable liquids, such as gasoline, oil, grease and diesel
  3. Class C: Fires sparked from electrical sources
  4. Class D: Flammable metals
  5. Class K: Flammable cooking items, such as oil, fat and grease

Many homeowners keep fire extinguishers of multiple classes in their homes in case of emergency, which assists in putting out many types of fires.

• Fire escape ladders. If your home is multiple stories, or if you reside in an apartment or condominium complex, be sure there is a fire escape ladder with easy access from the top floor(s). These inventions have helped save lives!

Test Your Smoke Alarms

When is the last time you tested your smoke alarms?

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, smoke alarms powered by a nine-volt battery and smoke alarms wired into an electrical system should be tested monthly, keeping in mind that batteries should be replaced yearly and the entire smoke alarm should be replaced every 10 years. Smoke alarms containing a lithium battery should also be tested monthly, but since lithium batteries should not be replaced, the entire alarm should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

There are two basic types of smoke alarms: photoelectric and ionization. They each detect different types of fires, so it is recommended to have either both in each room or a single smoke alarm in each room that detects both photoelectric and ionization smoke, also known as a dual sensor smoke alarm.

Planning to have a recreational backyard fire? Many people enjoy the outdoors by lighting a fire to use for warmth, cooking and camping. However, fire is obviously dangerous if it gets out of hand. Here are some tips on how to have a successful – and safe – backyard fire.

• Check your local laws. Recreational fire restrictions vary between towns, so be sure you are respecting the law before you light your fire.
• Keep fire pits at least 10 feet, but preferably 25 feet, away from houses, buildings and other structures. The farther away, the better!
• Pay attention to the direction of the wind. If the smoke is blowing toward nearby bushes or your neighbor’s property, consider relocating the fire or postponing it until the wind lessens.
• If you are burning wood, make sure it is dry. Using green wood and other materials creates not only more smoke but also air pollutants that can be toxic for the environment.
• Consider using propane or natural gas fires rather than burning wood. Wood burning is considered pollution, and propane and natural gas burn cleaner and reduce harmful air pollutants.

With them, come not only the Holidays, but also the time of year when most residential fires occur. SERVPRO of Jackson and DeKalb Counties wants to remind you to not only are safe, but also to prepare an escape plan with your family in the event the unthinkable happens.

Below you will find fire prevention safety tips, as well as a link to FEMA's website that outlines escape plans that you can utilize in your own home. We encourage you to become familiar with the safety tips, but also to forward this email along to family and friends as a loving reminder to be safe. 

Thanksgiving-

Did you know that Thanksgiving is the leading day of the year for residential fires involving cooking equipment?

• Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stovetop

• Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check it often

• Never leave an oven on overnight, or while you are sleeping

Christmas-

• When choosing a tree, always make sure to choose one with fresh, green needles that aren't falling off

• Make sure to cut off the bottom 2 inches of the tree. This allows for the tree to stay more hydrated

• Make sure the tree is at least 3 feet away from ANY heat source including ceiling lights

• Heating sources too close to trees cause 1 in every 5 tree fires

• Add water to the tree daily

• Never connect more than 3 strands of lights together

• Only use lights that have the label of an independent testing laboratory 

• Turn lights off when leaving the home or going to sleep

•  Follow the same cooking rules as stated above for Thanksgiving

General Fire Prevention Tips-

• Have heating sources and chimneys cleaned and inspected annually

• Turn portable heaters off when going to sleep

• Have a sturdy screen in front of your fireplace

• Test smoke alarms monthly

1. Never leave your kitchen unattended. An out-of-sight kitchen means that the kitchen is not within your control.
2. If you have to leave your kitchen, ensure all appliances are turned to off-not just low.
3. Wear your hair pulled back, be sure your sleeves aren’t loose or too long, and don’t wear easily flammable garments.
4. To prevent any unfortunate spills that could result in disaster, keep your work space clear of kids, animals, and company unless given instructions on what to do.
5. Clear your cooking area of any flammable material. Oven mitts, food packaging, towels, and clean your countertops of grease accumulation.
6. Double Check all surfaces and appliances before you go to bed to guarantee a good night’s rest.
7. Consider taking cooking classes or watching online instructional videos to ensure safe cooking practices.

Test smoke alarms every month. If they’re not working, change the batteries.

Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.

If a fire occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL FOR HELP. Never go back inside for anything or anyone.

     In a typical house fire, more damage is caused by smoke than by the actual flames. Smoke alarms have been a staple in the American home, but should not go unnoticed or taken for granted. According to the National Fire Protection Association, three out of five home fire deaths resulted from fires in properties that did not have working smoke alarms. The death rate per 100 reported home fires was more than twice as high in homes that did not have any working smoke alarms. Most smoke alarm failures are due to missing, disconnected or dead batteries. According to the NFPA, there are precautions to take when it comes to maintaining and checking your smoke alarms.

Smoke alarm safety tips

·      Install smoke alarms inside and outside of each bedroom or sleeping area. Every level of the home, including the basement should have smoke alarms installed.

·      It is recommended to have interconnected smoke alarms so that when one smoke alarm goes off, they all go off at once.

·      Test all smoke alarms at least once a month by hitting the test button on the smoke alarm.

·      Smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling or high up on a wall.

·      Replace all smoke alarms at 10 years of use.

·      People that are hard of hearing can order special smoke alarms that include flashing strobe lights and bed shakers to alert the person within the property.

·      Make sure to talk with your children about the importance of smoke alarms and what to do in case of a fire.

·      There are two kinds of alarms: ionization and photoelectric

                  o   Ionization smoke alarms are quicker to warn                              about flaming fires

                  o   Photoelectric smoke alarms are quicker to warn                          about smoldering fires

                  o   It is best to have both present in the home

How We Record Progress

Do you ever wonder how SERVPRO keeps up with every customer’s job progress? When a customer first calls in a loss, we at SERVPRO of Jackson and DeKalb Counties enter all of the pertinent information into a form called the FNOL or “First Notice of Loss.” This form is sent to everyone involved including our First Responders, Office staff so they can communicate with your insurance company, managers and ownership so they know the status of every job in progress. Every note, assessment, detail associated with that job from that point forward is attached to that initial FNOL so that it is at our fingertips if you ever have any questions or concerns.

We all know about the kitchen fires, the cigarette fires, and the electrical fires that cause severe damage in homes. Common Tragedies

Fires and fire damage are common tragedies among homeowners. But, there are ways to lessen the damage. SERVPRO of Jackson and Dekalb Counties is Here to Help so fires don’t ruin your warm weather activities. One is having a proper fire extinguisher --especially, during grilling season. Make sure you follow these rules from our friends at the American Red Cross when it comes to having a good extinguisher:

• Always have more than one working extinguisher in your home.
• Install extinguishers high on the wall and away from any heat sources.
• If an extinguisher doesn’t work on a fire immediately, drop it and get out. Most portable extinguishers empty in 8 seconds.
• Make sure the gauge on your extinguisher is properly charged.

Once you have the right fire extinguisher, always remember PASS:

P- Pull the pin and hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you.

A- Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

S- Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly

S- Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in your Fort Payne or Scottsboro home.

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.  

Smoke and soot facts:

• Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
• Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
• The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke - wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire.
