A dryer fire at a family residence that we were called out to do clean-up for.

According to the U.S. Fire Administration

2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss.

Failure to clean the dryer (34 percent) is the leading cause of home clothes dryer fires.

More home clothes dryer fires occur in the fall and winter months, peaking in January.

How to prevent a dryer fire:

This January, check your connections! Be sure your dryer vents are clean.

A few best practices are:

  • Clean your dryer vent EVERY TIME you use the dryer.
  • Clean your dryer vent ductwork every year.
  • Have your dryer cleaned regularly by a professional, especially if it is taking longer than normal for clothes to dry.

What to expect after a dryer fire:

Smoke and soot are very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Jackson and DeKalb Counties will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Leading Causes of Kitchen Fires

6/16/2022 (Permalink)

Leading Causes of Kitchen Fires

On average, 49% of fires start in the kitchen making it one of the leading causes of house fires.. It only takes a quick moment for something on your stove to catch on fire, and you have a costly disaster on your hands. Here are some safety tips to avoid expensive home repairs:

Frying With Oil

66% of kitchen fires occur while cooking with oil. Anytime you fry food using oil, it needs constant attention. Grease fires can spread fast and still have the capability to cause a fire if the residue is left on the stovetop after use. If your food catches fire while cooking, safely cover a non-glass lid onto the pan to extinguish the flames, and then turn off your stove. Do not use water; this will only cause your fire to spread.

Leaving Cooking Unattended

It is imperative not to walk away from your food while you're cooking. Neglecting your food while cooking is the leading cause of kitchen fires. If you are cooking, it is essential to only focus on that one task. It is not recommended to multi-task while cooking because an accident can happen in a split second.

Cooking with Too High Temperatures

Although turning your stove to its highest setting seems like a good idea when cooking, setting your appliances too high is very dangerous. It is recommended to cook at medium temperatures to prevent food from combusting. If you have a gas stove, never let the flame rise above the top of the pan. Cooking requires a lot of patience; jumping the gun and attempting to cook faster than intended can put you and your family at risk.

If your kitchen catches on fire and you can’t control it, call 911 immediately. After the fire was safely put out, you may need repairs to your kitchen, including flooring, cabinets, and countertops. Keep in mind that smoke damage can also factor in the cost of repairs as it can damage your walls and the material underneath.

If you have experienced a kitchen fire, call SERVPRO to come and fix the damage!

Fire Prevention: Everything you Need to Know

6/16/2022 (Permalink)

Unfortunately, a house fire can happen anywhere at any time. It is important to practice preventive measures to ease the possibility of a fire occurring and protect your loved ones. Always be prepared if a fire occurs in your home. Here are a few ways to ease the possibility of a fire taking place in your home.

Use Surge Protectors

A surge protector is a device used to protect electrical devices from voltage spikes. With a surge in power, you are more likely to experience an electrical fire. A surge protector will alleviate the anxiety of excess electricity causing a fire. It can also be helpful to unplug devices when they aren’t in use. Unplugging your device will ensure that there is no electricity being used and can reduce the chance of a fire. Devices like TVs, game systems, and computers still use power even when they are not in use.

Never Leave Flames Unattended

You can identify a problem by paying attention to lit flames in your home. Stay mindful when cooking, lighting a candle or starting a fire in your fireplace. Always stay in the kitchen when cooking, as kitchen fires are one of the top causes of house fires. Keeping a fire extinguisher in your kitchen or near the fireplace can help fix the issue.

Keep Your Home Clutter-Free

Not only can a cluttered house start a fire, but it can also be one of the main reasons a fire spreads rapidly.  An abundance of items covering your home gives the fire plenty of space to spread and cause more destruction. Keeping an organized home can potentially be the saving grace for you and your family.

While fires have declined tremendously over the last few decades, today’s fires cause much more loss and damage. On average, the fire loss per house is around $23,500; however, with homeowners insurance, you may be able to rebuild or replace your belongings lost in the fire.  According to ton the NFPA, the leading causes of house fires include:

  • Cooking
  • Heating Equipment
  • Electrical Fires
  • Arson
  • Smoking Materials

After 911, contact us to repair your home from damage after a fire.

All You Need To Know About Smoke Damage

House on fire with smoke coming from the windows and the chimney with the SERVPRO logo over the top of the photo

If you have ever read up on wildfires, you may be aware that it's not the fire that causes the most damage.

Instead, it's the smoke!

Even after the flames are extinguished, the smoke is still there, often existing in a visible or invisible state, wreaking havoc.

Wondering how smoke damage can be hazardous?

Stay with us as we decrypt the lesser-known facts about smoke damage.

Types of Smoke & The Damage They Cause

Smoke isn't just the white smog that rises when you take a puff from your cigarette.

Instead, it can exist in various forms, as described below:

  • Wet Smoke

With an overpowering and unpleasant odor, wet smoke fumes arise due to burning plastic or rubber at a low temperature. Wet smoke exists in a greasy, sticky form, and can be quite cumbersome to clean.

  • Dry Smoke

In contrast, dry smoke results from the burning of paper and wood at high temperatures. However, dry smoke exists in a powdery form that is easier to clean, but these tiny particles can hide in porous furniture.

  • Protein Smoke

As its name suggests, protein smoke arises from burning organic matter and food. This smoke type is usually invisible but can cause paint discoloration and emit a powerful unpleasant odor.

  • Fuel Smoke

Fuel smoke arises due to the burning of petroleum. However, fuel smoke is quite visible and can leave an unsightly stain on walls.

Smoke Damage On Home Structures

Smoke consists of different acidic elements, primarily carbon and sulfur, that can be devastating for your home.

Here's how the smoke damage types mentioned earlier can affect your home's appeal and furniture.

  • Corrodes Metal

Smoke can cause permanent damage to metal accessories in your home. Anything ranging from doorknobs to metal pipes can get tarnished or corroded due to smoke.

Furthermore, damage to the home's pipes can ultimately cause leakage and water damage.

  • Causes Discoloration

Smoke can easily cause discoloration to porous materials in the home, such as wood, plastic, curtains, upholstery, and marble – basically, all those essential items to make countertops and kitchen tiles.

  • Creates Stains

Smoke can even stain the wall coverings and carpets. In fact, the leftover acidic residue may eat the entire wall coverings.

  • Foul Odor

Smoke odor can be unpleasant, and if the soot is stuck in your clothes, the smell may settle forever.

  • Damages Furniture

Porous furniture like cabinets and hardwood floors are the best place for the smoke to hide. If the smoke residue exists in a powdery form, you can expect small particles to hide under the surfaces, making the remediation process extremely tough.

Takeaway

Smoke damage isn’t something you can ignore. After all, it can negatively impact your life in ways more than one.

In case your home has been subjected to smoke damage, contact SERVPRO – #1 in the cleanup and restoration industry as well as specialists in fire and smoke damage.

4 Top Extension Cord Fire Safety Tips

3/14/2022 (Permalink)

4 Top Extension Cord Fire Safety Tips

Almost every home has an extension cord, right?

To make the most of your available outlets in your house, it's likely that you use an extension cable or power bar. But did you know that every year 3300 home fires are caused by extension cords?

Yes, that’s right.

You sure want to protect your loved ones and property from devastating fires, right?

Then, embrace the following 4 top extension cord safety tips:

1. Never Exceed Wattage Rating

Each extension cord has a specified power it can carry. This quantity is called amperage or wattage rating.

You should avoid using extension cords with power-hungry appliances or plugging many electrical devices into a single extension cord.

On the other hand, if you think your appliances will require higher amperes, buy extension cables that have been rated to handle such wattages.

2. Keep An Eye Out For Damages

It is vital to check the condition of your extension cord and inspect the whole length to ensure that there aren't any punctures or breaks in the insulation.

If you spot any problem, please don't make an effort to repair them yourself by taping them back together using electrical tape. Damaged extension cables pose multiple threats, even leading to electrical fires.

In this circumstance, replacing them is the most prudent course of action.

3. Proper Storage

When extension cables are in use, they generate heat. If the wire is exposed, this might be hazardous to the user. Thus, the coating around the wiring is essential when it comes to extension cord safety.

When storing extension cords, wrap the cord loosely to avoid bending or twisting the wires, which can damage the wires and create a fire hazard.

4. Avoid Using Multiple Extensions

Have you ever tried to use an extension wire only to discover that the outlet is still too far away from your appliance? At some point, you must have considered using another extension cord to cover the gap.

This is not a very safe approach as you run the risk of overloading the extension cable. It can lead to overheating the cord and the wall socket in some cases, which poses an imminent threat of an electrical fire!

Alternatively, you can consider using an extension cord of a longer length.

Takeaway

Electrical fires can be catastrophic, leading to loss of life and property.

Follow the above-mentioned top safety cord extension tips to minimize accidents and safeguard all that matters to you. In case you have experienced fire damage, give us a call for your quote at 256-259-4333.

Yes! A candle can take your day of peace to a day of drama when it’s not handled properly. According to the national fire protection association from 2015-2019 U.S. fire departments responded to an estimated 7,400 home structure fires that were started by candles per year. Did you know that candle fires caused an annual average of 90 deaths, 670 injuries, and $291 million in direct property damage? Check out our tips below to stay safe!

Firework Safety

Did you know according to the National Fire Protection Association, that fireworks start an average of 18,500 fires each year?! We want you to have a safe time as you celebrate the Fourth of July! Here are some tips from the US Consumer Product Safety Commission to keep in mind.

  • Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.
  • Avoid buying fireworks that are packaged in brown paper because this is often a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays and that they could pose a danger to consumers.
  • Always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don't realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees - hot enough to melt some metals.
  • Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
  • Never try to re-light or pick up fireworks that have not ignited fully.
  • Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
  • Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy in case of fire or another mishap.
  • Light fireworks one at a time, then move back quickly.
  • Never carry fireworks in a pocket or shoot them off in metal or glass containers.
  • After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding it to prevent a trash fire.
  • Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them.

Why does SPRING have the highest incidence of outdoor fires?

4/13/2021 (Permalink)

field of dry grass on fire with smoke going into the sky with the SERVPRO logo on top

Did you know it was reported that about 30% of tree, brush, and grass fires happen during the Spring season?

According to FEMA.gov this occurs because

  • Humidity is lower
  • Winds tend to be higher
  • Dead leaves are still on the ground

They say those listed above are the perfect situation to cause a fire due to the sun beaming down and bring those leaves.

  1. Keep matches and lighters away from children.
  2. If you want to burn trash, do so in a metal container, after you have cleared the surrounding area. Make sure you aren't near overhanging branches, and never leave a fire unattended.
  3. Never throw cigarette butts out your vehicle window.
  4. Install spark arresters on small engines and equipment.
  5. Weld only in a shop building or a cleared area.
  6. If your car has a catalytic converter, keep it off-dry grass and away from brush.
  7. Report any suspicious or out of place persons or vehicles that you think might be maliciously starting fires

Grill Master Fire Safety Tips

3/16/2021 (Permalink)

Grill with coals on fire to the left with the SERVPRO logo centered over top

Time has gone forward, dogwood trees are blooming, temperatures are warming up, and we’re in the backyard grilling!

As many are preparing to have a little more fun than we did last year (due to the pandemic) our grills are ready to be fired up.

While we’re hanging out it’s important we know that according to NFPA, Grill fires on residential properties result in an estimated average of 10 deaths, 100 injuries, and $37 million in property loss each year! That means a casual evening bbq could turn into a disaster without the proper knowledge. We’ve provided some tips to keep you and your family safe.

  • Make sure your grill is clean before using it. Old grease and meat pieces can easily cause fire or fire flares
  • Keep a water spray bottle in the event your fire flares up
  • Grill away from your home and other flammable structures
  • If you’re using a gas grill check for gas leaks- You can make sure no gas is leaking from your gas grill by making a solution of half liquid dish soap and half water and rubbing it on the hoses and connections. Then, turn the gas on (with the grill lid open.) If the soap forms large bubbles, that's a sign that the hoses have tiny holes or that the connections are not tight enough.
  • Don’t leave your grill unattended

Keep a fire extinguisher within a couple of steps of your grill. And KNOW HOW TO USE IT.

  • Did you know larger homes require more smoke alarms?
  • Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old
  • Test all smoke alarms at least once a month. Press the test button to be sure the alarm is working.
  • It is best to use interconnected smoke alarms. When one smoke alarm sounds they all sound.
  • Have an escape plan
  • Your ability to get out of your house during a fire depends on advance warning from smoke alarms and advance planning.
  • Walkthrough your home and look for two ways out of every room (escape planning)
  • Plan an outside meeting place where everyone will meet once they have escaped. A good meeting place is something permanent, like a tree, light pole, or mailbox a safe distance in front of the home.

How to handle grease fires

10/14/2020 (Permalink)

skillet on an oven in the kitchen engulfed in flames

According to CNN NEWS, cooking fires are the leading cause of home fires in the United States & grease fires are a main culprit. Thus with holidays right around the corner we thought of our dear customers. We know many will be frying turkeys for the holidays and just cooking in general. Well if that’s you, then you need to know how to cook a great Thanksgiving dinner without burning down the house.

So let’s say you do end up having something in the eye of your stove and you see a small flame. So do you grab a cup of water to put it out? No, even though it started from something in the eye of the stove, you’re frying chicken and there’s grease on that pot which is fueling those flames. It’s now a grease fire!

Well, how do you put it out? You need a fire extinguisher that can handle grease fires and should be dry and chemical-based. Using a fire extinguisher that's water based can have disastrous results!  We would suggest that you pull the pin, you squeeze the trigger, and you aim at the base of the fire. If you put it up high, the chemical falls on top of the fire and doesn't help.

If you encounter smoke damage or even fire damage while putting it out don’t hesitate to give us a call! As water and fire damage specialists, we have the experience, the expertise, and the advanced training that enables us to get your property restored quickly and thoroughly.

Grill Safety Tips

8/6/2020 (Permalink)

backyard home with food cooking on the grill with family in the background and food on a plate to be put on the grill.

Did you know that according to nfpa.org July is the peak month for grill fires (18%), including both structure, outdoor or unclassified fires, followed by June (15%), May (13%), and August (12%). Guess what month we’re in...August! On top of that many of us are home more than we have been in previous years due to the health pandemic we’re all trying our best to avoid. With that in mind, many are cooking at home more than usual. If you’re that cook that happens to be a grill master here are some tips that can help keep you safe.

  1. Make sure your gas/coal grill is away from your home. Don’t grill too close to your home or in your garage. The smoke needs an exit and in case of a fire, you should be 10ft or more from your home.
  2. Have a fire extinguisher, sand, and a spray bottle of water. The spray bottle of water is to handle small flare-ups. If it begins to get out of hand use your fire extinguisher or sand to put it out.
  3. Another way to prevent fires, in general, is to keep your grill clean. Not only does it keep out bugs and rodents but it also keeps grease build-up from causing a fire!

Well, what if you follow these tips and still end up having a home or business fire? We’re your fire, water, mold, and sanitization experts! In addition to fire, smoke, and soot damage, your home may also suffer from water damage as a result of the firefighting efforts. This type of damage can be especially upsetting and destructive for your family to process. You may feel stressed, confused, and vulnerable, so you’ll need a caring expert to guide you through this crisis. We’ll treat you with respect and empathy, and we’ll always treat your home and belongings with care.

Do you know the different types of fires?

Classes of fire

  • Class A - Fires involving solid materials such as wood, paper or textiles. These are said to be the easiest to put out. It is recommended to use water or a fire extinguisher to put out class A fires.
  • Class B - Involve ignitable liquids or gases like petroleum grease, alcohol, paint, propane, or gasoline. Class B fires should be extinguished using foam, powder, or carbon dioxide extinguishers.
  • Class C - fires involving electrical. To extinguish this type of fire it is recommended to use carbon dioxide or dry powder extinguishers.
  • Class D - Fires involving metals. Fire Equipment Manufacturer's Association advised extinguishing these types of fires with a dry powder extinguisher only
  • Class k - Fires involving cooking oils such as in deep-fat fryers. Extinguish a Class K fire with a wet chemical extinguisher, according to the New York City Fire Department.

Did you know when lightning strikes it can cause a fire?

4/24/2020 (Permalink)

clouds with multiple lightning strikes coming from them are seen across a city in a night sky

Did you know when lightning strikes it can cause a fire?

If lightning were to strike your home expect to hear an explosive sound so loud and powerful that everything inside your house shakes. Many newly constructed homes are designed to withstand or absorb lightning strike so exterior damage is usually minor at the point of impact. The real concern is the aftermath!

It’s estimated that a lightning bolt's temperature can reach 50,000 degrees. With that being said, if your home is hit, you would experience fire damage. Often people won't notice a fire caused by lightning right away because it can hide in attic spaces or inside walls. Call the fire department immediately if your home is struck by lightning! Also, schedule a follow-up electrical diagnosis of your home's wiring with a qualified electrical company.

After the fire trucks leave, your home likely suffers from fire and smoke damage and extensive water damage from firefighting efforts. SERVPRO of Jackson and DeKalb Counties have the specialized fire restoration training needed to restore your home to pre-fire conditions.

Our Professionals study IICRC standards and best practices in water restoration, fire restoration, mold remediation, carpet and upholstery cleaning, and other cleaning and restoration courses. In other words we’re highly trained and open 24/7 give us a call today 256-259-4333

Do you know how to service your smoke alarms?

  1. Replace the batteries when you hear the beep or once a year.
  2. Dust your alarms the can get cobwebs around them and you don’t want anything blocking them. So vacuum those spiderwebs and keep them clean.
  3. Test them monthly!
  4. Replace after 10 years
  5. Invest in the interconnected alarms (one sounds they all sound)
  6. Make sure you have one in EVERY BEDROOM and on every level in your home.

All of the above are great tips but if you lack an exit plan those tips can be of no use. Make sure you and your family sit down and communicate a fire safety plan of escape. That way there’s less chaos and panic if the situation does occur.

Home Fire Equipment

8/19/2019 (Permalink)

Home fires occur for a variety of reasons, but there are several pieces of at-home equipment to help keep you, your family, and your home safe. These include:

  • Smoke detectors. These devices will sound an alarm if significant smoke is detected in your home, alerting you and possibly your neighbors to the fire. Smoke detectors are often available at your local fire department.
  • Fire extinguishers. There are typically five classes of fire extinguishers:
    1. Class A: Ordinary combustibles, such as paper, fabric, wood, cardboard and plastic
    2. Class B: Flammable liquids, such as gasoline, oil, grease and diesel
    3. Class C: Fires sparked from electrical sources
    4. Class D: Flammable metals
    5. Class K: Flammable cooking items, such as oil, fat and grease

Many homeowners keep fire extinguishers of multiple classes in their homes in case of emergency, which assists in putting out many types of fires.

  • Fire escape ladders. If your home is multiple stories, or if you reside in an apartment or condominium complex, be sure there is a fire escape ladder with easy access from the top floor(s). These inventions have helped save lives!

If you experience a home fire and it continues to grow in size, do not proceed in your attempt to extinguish the fire. Exit your home as quickly and calmly as possible, call 911 and have our phone number ready. We’re here to make fire damage “Like it never even happened.”

Emergency Fire Damage Tips

8/9/2019 (Permalink)

After experiencing a damaging fire, you will need to go through home or business to assess the damage and inventory salvageable items. To keep you safe and minimize further damages, follow these emergency fire damage tips:

  • Keep your hands clean.
  • Limit movement in the home to prevent further damage.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on carpeted traffic areas to prevent further soiling.
  • If the electricity is off, empty your freezer and refrigerator and keep their doors open.
  • Wipe soot from chrome on faucets and appliances, then protect it with a light coating of lubricant.

Do not attempt to wash any walls, painted surfaces, carpet or upholstered furniture without first contacting a team member from SERVPRO of Jackson and DeKalb Counties at 256-845-4402. Our team specializes in making fire damage “Like it never even happened.” Additionally, do not attempt to clean any electrical appliances that may have been close to fire or water without consulting a repair service.

Test Your Smoke Alarms

7/10/2019 (Permalink)

When is the last time you tested your smoke alarms?

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, smoke alarms powered by a nine-volt battery and smoke alarms wired into an electrical system should be tested monthly, keeping in mind that batteries should be replaced yearly and the entire smoke alarm should be replaced every 10 years. Smoke alarms containing a lithium battery should also be tested monthly, but since lithium batteries should not be replaced, the entire alarm should be replaced according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

There are two basic types of smoke alarms: photoelectric and ionization. They each detect different types of fires, so it is recommended to have either both in each room or a single smoke alarm in each room that detects both photoelectric and ionization smoke, also known as a dual sensor smoke alarm.

Set reminders to remember to keep you smoke alarms updated!

Backyard Recreational Fires

7/8/2019 (Permalink)

Planning to have a recreational backyard fire? Many people enjoy the outdoors by lighting a fire to use for warmth, cooking and camping. However, fire is obviously dangerous if it gets out of hand. Here are some tips on how to have a successful – and safe – backyard fire.

  • Check your local laws. Recreational fire restrictions vary between towns, so be sure you are respecting the law before you light your fire.
  • Keep fire pits at least 10 feet, but preferably 25 feet, away from houses, buildings and other structures. The farther away, the better!
  • Pay attention to the direction of the wind. If the smoke is blowing toward nearby bushes or your neighbor’s property, consider relocating the fire or postponing it until the wind lessens.
  • If you are burning wood, make sure it is dry. Using green wood and other materials creates not only more smoke but also air pollutants that can be toxic for the environment.
  • Consider using propane or natural gas fires rather than burning wood. Wood burning is considered pollution, and propane and natural gas burn cleaner and reduce harmful air pollutants.

Enjoy your backyard recreational fire…safely!

What To Do After A Fire

After Disaster

There are some things you should understand before attempting to combat secondary damages produced by a fire including how to protect yourself, your family, or anyone else that might enter your home while restoration is underway.

Always think safety first when dealing with fire damage in your Lookout Mountain, Sand Mountain, or Wills Valley home. Even though the fire may be out, dust, soot, and airborne particles can wreak havoc on your breathing. Anyone entering your home should wear the appropriate personal protective equipment including masks, gloves, boots, and eye wear.

Before entering your home, understand that hazards may exist that pose severe risks to you and your family. You must be aware of what might occur in every situation to help keep everyone safe. If you have even the tiniest doubt, it could cause someone their life. Never take any chances, get a fully licensed professional, like those offered at SERVPRO, to take risks for you.

An expertly trained restoration technician wears the safety equipment and takes any necessary precautions to avoid hazards of different types. SERVPRO technicians understand how to prevent contact with a variety of substances that might cause harm. They also know when and when not to ventilate an area. We have access to a range of industrial-grade equipment that allows us to remove water used to extinguish a fire.

All of the burned debris and materials cause odors that should be withdrawn and disposed of in a certain way. The contents of your home that are restorable require special handling to prevent additional damage. Your SERVPRO team uses a restore versus replace mentality when considering alternatives during your restoration. We do everything we can to prevent losses and restore your home; this means that you can count on us to treat each item accordingly and give you the results you deserve.

Make the most of what is available today. At SERVPRO of Jackson and DeKalb Counties, our staff is proud to serve as your one-stop solution and show pure dedication in providing you quality, full-service solutions to any emergency situations that occur on your property.

You Don't Want The Smoke!

2/17/2019 (Permalink)

Damage Caused by Smoke

In a typical house fire, more damage is caused by smoke than by the actual flames. During a fire, the materials that burn produce toxic smoke that is actually filled with microscopic particles known as soot. These tiny particles become charged from the extreme heat and migrate to cooler air found in other parts of the house. Because this smoke is often extremely hot, it can cause additional damage away from the actual source of the fire by melting plastics, scorching fabrics and textiles and spreading toxic gases that can kill any living thing in its path. That's why smoke alarms throughout your home are critical to saving lives.

The Department of Homeland Security says in less than 30 seconds, a small flame can turn into a major fire! It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for the house to be engulfed in flames. Most deadly fires occur in the home when people are asleep. If you wake up to a fire, you won't have time to grab valuables because fire spreads too quickly and the smoke is too thick. There is only time to escape.

Here at SERVPRO of Jackson and DeKalb Counties, our trained specialists know how to restore your belongings after a house fire.  We hope you never need our services, but if you do, getting you back to normal is our number one priority! Restoring smoke and fire damaged items costs less than replacing them. Having your belongings restored, especially items of sentimental value, help most families recover from the trauma of a fire more quickly than otherwise possible.

Fire Safety Tips

Tips For Fire Safety:

Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.

Test smoke alarms every month. If they’re not working, change the batteries.

Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year.

If a fire occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT and CALL FOR HELP. Never go back inside for anything or anyone.

We partner with the American Red Cross and also our local fire departments so fire prevention is VERY important to us! These tips are from REDCROSS.ORG

Here are some tips on WHAT TO DO AFTER A FIRE:

Call 9-1-1. Give first aid where needed; cool and cover burns to reduce the chance of further injury or infection.

Let friends and family know you’re safe.

People and animals that are seriously injured or burned should be transported to professional medical or veterinary help immediately.

Stay out of fire-damaged homes until local fire authorities say it is safe to re-enter.

Caring for Yourself & Loved Ones

Pay attention to how you and your loved ones are experiencing and handling stress. Promote emotional recovery by following these tips.

  • Discard any food that has been exposed to heat, smoke or soot.

Fire Damage Fire Safety Tips

  • Watch pets closely and keep them under your direct control.
  • Help people who require additional assistance- infants, elderly people, those without transportation, large families who may need additional help in an emergency situation, people with disabilities, and the people who care for them.
  • Also from REDCROSS.ORG, check it out for more information and make sure you are prepared in case an emergency happens in your Scottsboro, Rainsville, or Fort Payne home!

Fire Safety Precautions

9/5/2018 (Permalink)

Smoke alarms have been a staple in the American home, but should not go unnoticed or taken for granted. According to the National Fire Protection Association, three out of five home fire deaths resulted from fires in properties that did not have working smoke alarms. The death rate per 100 reported home fires was more than twice as high in homes that did not have any working smoke alarms. Most smoke alarm failures are due to missing, disconnected or dead batteries. According to the NFPA, there are precautions to take when it comes to maintaining and checking your smoke alarms.

Smoke alarm safety tips

·      Install smoke alarms inside and outside of each bedroom or sleeping area. Every level of the home, including the basement should have smoke alarms installed.

·      It is recommended to have interconnected smoke alarms so that when one smoke alarm goes off, they all go off at once.

·      Test all smoke alarms at least once a month by hitting the test button on the smoke alarm.

·      Smoke alarms should be installed on the ceiling or high up on a wall.

·      Replace all smoke alarms at 10 years of use.

·      People that are hard of hearing can order special smoke alarms that include flashing strobe lights and bed shakers to alert the person within the property.

·      Make sure to talk with your children about the importance of smoke alarms and what to do in case of a fire.

·      There are two kinds of alarms: ionization and photoelectric

o   Ionization smoke alarms are quicker to warn                              about flaming fires

o   Photoelectric smoke alarms are quicker to warn                          about smoldering fires

o   It is best to have both present in the home

Dryer Vent Fires

The More You Know

Different kinds of home fires..

We all know about the kitchen fires, the cigarette fires, and the electrical fires that cause severe damage in homes. There is another kind of fire that causes over 34% of home fires each year: Dryer Vents. Failure to clean these drying vents are causing more and more fire damage in homes each year.

According to our friends at FEMA, during the peak months of fall and winter, they are even more likely to occur in your home.

The facts do not lie,  FEMA reports: "2,900 home clothes dryer fires are reported each year and cause an estimated 5 deaths, 100 injuries, and $35 million in property loss." That's a staggering statistic.

Keep your home safe during the winter season and year-round by keeping those dryer vents nice and clean!

Your Property and Fires

Common Tragedies

Fires and fire damage are common tragedies among homeowners. But, there are ways to lessen the damage. SERVPRO of Jackson and Dekalb Counties is Here to Help so fires don’t ruin your warm weather activities. One is having a proper fire extinguisher --especially, during grilling season. Make sure you follow these rules from our friends at the American Red Cross when it comes to having a good extinguisher:

  • Always have more than one working extinguisher in your home.
  • Install extinguishers high on the wall and away from any heat sources.
  • If an extinguisher doesn’t work on a fire immediately, drop it and get out. Most portable extinguishers empty in 8 seconds.
  • Make sure the gauge on your extinguisher is properly charged.

Once you have the right fire extinguisher, always remember PASS:

P- Pull the pin and hold the extinguisher with the nozzle pointing away from you.

A- Aim low. Point the extinguisher at the base of the fire.

S- Squeeze the lever slowly and evenly

S- Sweep the nozzle from side to side.

We hope these tips keep fires and fire damage from your homes. But, if you have fire damage and need SERVPRO, we are always Here to Help.

Facts About Smoke and Soot

9/19/2017 (Permalink)

Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in your Fort Payne or Scottsboro home.

That old fire smell

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor.

There are two different types of smoke - wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Jackson and Dekalb Counties will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke - Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke - Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue - Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

What to do after a fire

9/13/2017 (Permalink)

Damage after a house fire.
